Dr. Birgit Haller

Dr. Birgit Haller studied Geoecology/Ecosystems Management at the University of Tuebingen and obtained her PhD from the University of Stuttgart with her thesis on „decentralized urban water infrastructure “.

During and after her PhD period she worked at the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology in Stuttgart. Within the department of environmental biotechnology and within research and development projects she studied questions on site specific planning in water infrastructure and on sustainable water management including the nexus of water, energy and waste sector. The research activities were focusing on decentralized systems for the efficient use of local water and energy resources. Within study and research stays in Spain, Peru and Brazil she gained international experience. Afterwards, within a staff position with Prof. Thomas Hirth, she was engaged in the networking process on sustainability management in research organizations. In the context of the Fraunhofer sustainability strategy, she designed the first sustainability reports both on institute and organization level. In several joint research projects with participants from science, industry, politics and society she took care of bringing together different disciplinary approaches and stakeholder interests.
